H.M. "Muggins" Taylor was nicknamed for his favorite card game, Muggins. He was a scout for the Montana Column commanded by General John Gibbon. He is forever tied to the Custer legend for discovering the remains of General George Custer and his men after the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Taylor carried news of the Custer defeat to Fort Ellis, the closest telegraph, near Bozeman, Mt. The Memorial located in the Boothill Cemetery tells the story of the death of this former Deputy Sheriff of Coulson.
