During shared reading, children join in on known words and phrases in a whole group setting while the teacher reads from big books, chart paper, the overhead, sentence strips, or any other source of print. Children read more and more of the text on subsequent re-readings until they are able to read it independently. The teacher models the use of reading strategies and works on skills such as conventions of print.
