Nikki McDonald's kindergartners used interactive writing to label pictures of sea animals.  They counted the sounds in the words and drew lines for each sound. For example: the word "shell" only had 3 sounds.  They wrote the words and used the letter chart for a reference.

Deb Klusman's students labeled pictures by writing, "I like the rain."  The umbrellas, made from paper plates, have been each uniquely painted with lots of great ideas and details.  Children can learn some of the 6 trait vocabulary of ideas and details through illustrations and their own artwork.

This interactive writing from Patti Preston and Jana O'Donnell's classroom teaches many of the sight words while working on phonics.

The poem to the left can be written on sentence strips and put in a pocket chart as a shared reading piece. Each time it is read a new child's name can be put in the blank.   After reading it for several days and working on possible phonics (for example: the "ay" chunk) a small copy can be made and children can write their own names in the blank.  This can either be put in a class book or individual poetry binders.

Click on the picture for a copy of the poem.

The poem to the left can be used for shared reading to teach sight words and concepts of print.  Other words such as "dripping" or "splashing" can be substituted for the word "falling." The tune to this song goes to "Happy Birthday to You."

The students in Jami Holton's room used interactive writing brainstorm words to describe spring.

Richie Selleck's class interactively wrote a letter to the Earth for Earth Day.  She used the piece for future shared reading and working on chunks.

Shelly Dunbar's class celebrated Earth Day by writing a pledge on  large paper bags to take care of the earth . The bags were then given back to the grocery store to distribute to customers on Earth Day and pass on the environmental message.

Doretta Lambert used the book, In the Rain with Baby Duck, to increase vocabulary. On a subsequent reading, children discovered various words that replaced the word "said."
