Interactive Writing Ideas

Use your imagination when coming up with ideas for using interactive writing with your kindergarten class.  Remember to start off easy with something fast like labeling objects in the room.  Typically, the teacher will do more of the writing in the beginning and just let the children come up and write the letters and sounds they know. As children increase their knowledge of letters and sounds they will gradually be given more of the  responsibility for writing.

It is important to always keep in mind the purpose for the particular lesson and negotiate the message to bring in letters, chunks, words, etc. that are the focus of the lesson.  Additionally, keep in mind how the skills learned today can guide instruction tomorrow.
