Interactive Writing
Interactive Writing is the process of negotiating text with
students and then taking turns sharing the pen at strategic
points. The teacher promotes success by selecting children to
write based on what that individual child is capable of writing.
Interactive writing promotes phonological awareness, letter
recognition, site word identification, and conventions of print.

In kindergarten children might begin the year by writing labels for objects around the room or the names of shapes, numbers, or colors to put on a chart or wall. As the year goes on, the writing might extend to longer sentences and include topics such as science, math concepts, surveys, or virtually any other subject. The teacher will provide more support and probably do the majority of the writing at the beginning of the year and will gradually withdraw some of the support as the children become more independent.
