Fall Ideas

At the beginning of the year a graph was made to chart how many boys and girls were in the classroom.  Interactive writing was used to record the data.

From Jan Maxwell

Students from Angela Shull's classroom made a poster about "what good readers do" to work on the word "they."

To promote rhyming, Lori Paulson and Vicky Eliason read the book, Down by the Bay  and encouraged children to come up with their own rhyming phrases to add to the song.

Alpha-boxes were used to record words children learned about  the moon during nonfiction read alouds.  They will continue to add words during their studies.  The chart will be used during writer's workshop and at the writing center.

From Linda Frey

Children reflected on what they had learned about the moon using the coding of:

 -   New information

?    Questions they have about the subject

!    Something that was interesting or a "Wow!"

From Linda Frey

Cheryl Klunder used a KWL chart to record what her students were thinking before, during and after reading informational text about bats.
Angela Shull's class brainstormed what they were going to be for Halloween to work on the word "said" and the punctuation to use with dialogue.

Interactive writing was used to work on various skills such as phonics, sight words, and punctuation.  It was then used to label children's artwork.

Interactive writing was used to brainstorm fall words.  Children could use these words in their stories about fall in writer's workshop and at the writing center.
